Ever see media — on the internet, on a billboard, on television — that royally pisses you off? For me there’s plenty: sexist advertising for the 2012 Olympic games; conservative talk radio hosts calling activists sluts; rape threats from a stale comedian. Wish you could do something about it, like call the producer, create a better advertisement, write a smarter and more sensitive article? I sure do.
What about media that you really, really love? The stuff that really moves you. Those wicked smart hosts on MSNBC. Your favorite musician telling off a sexist music industry straight to its face. Young women asking magazines to present the world with something better. A sweet female-made film (maybe by you?). I see it all the time and I just can’t get enough. In fact, I want more. Don’t you?
That’s why WAM! is going big. We’ve just launched a campaign to raise $10,000 in 30 days to create our Direct Action Network. It’s a whole entire project and website that will allow you (yes, you!) to take action against the media you don’t like and better access, create, and own what you love. We’ll have a whole host of exciting stuff: tools for effective organizing, a network of passionate people (you included!) who have taken our pledge, and place to share ideas and call others to action, too. It’ll be by and for people who want gender justice in today’s media. We deserve it.
We can’t do this without you. That’s why we need you to support to our campaign by giving here and taking the pledge here. With just a few clicks, you gain official superhero status. Want to make a world in which women have better access, representation, employment, and ownership in the media? We do, too. Together, we can make better media our reality. Together, we can be gender justice superheroes.
