WHY WE CREATED WAM!STAGE!:

As feminists, we raise our voices in many ways–everything from getting female voices heard in mainstream media to shouting at protests to speaking up with friends in uncomfortable situations. For musicians and dancers, our songs and our bodies *are* our voice, literally and as an activist metaphor for expressing our thoughts and experiences.

Yet music and entertainment industries often have nothing to do with the feminist agenda, and quite the opposite, can be dude-dominated scenes. From mostly-male staff at record labels and taste-making magazines through bands made up of all guys (or maybe plus one “sexy chick” if you’re “lucky”), we as feminist perfomers often find ourselves wondering why we’re still being ignored.

Didn’t Lilith Fair happen? Isn’t this 2012? And more importantly, what can we do about it?

We can have a WAM NYC show featuring performers who are also active feminists, that’s what! Julia Barry, Rebekah Spicuglia, and Janna Zinzi invite you to celebrate an evening of song, banter, and burlesque. We want to create a space that’s feminist, diverse, seriously creative, AND entertaining (wow, what a concept). It’s time to take back the performance space, ladies!
