CBD oil has become an increasingly popular form of treatment for many conditions and illnesses. It’s not a magical cure-all type of treatment. Still, the positive effects that CBD has on nausea, stress, pain, anxiety, and other symptoms are undeniable.
Given that it’s a popular treatment for nausea, many pregnant women feel the temptation to use CBD to ease their morning sickness. What’s more, as we all know, pregnancy comes with a lot more than simple nausea, and CBD is a great way to soothe many of the symptoms that all pregnant women have. However, the question of the day is — can pregnant women even use CBD oil?
Because it’s not regulated or approved by the FDA, we can’t characterize CBD as definitively “safe” for anyone. It’s non-addictive, sure. But the long-term effects, especially potential consequences for the baby, are still unknown.
What is CBD Oil and What Can We Use It For?
CBD oil, a derivative of the cannabis plant, has many medicinal properties. It contains high doses of cannabidiol and virtually none of the THC (the stuff that can get us high). Thus, all effects of CBD oil are positive and medicinal. We can use it topically, or we can ingest it — on its own or with food or beverages.
CBD oil is the go-to treatment for many people battling stress, depression, and anxiety. It has a calming, soothing effect on our nervous system, so many insomniacs also use it. What’s more, CBD oil can have other positive effects. Most notably, it can diminish the symptoms of many severe diseases. People with MS, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, and many other disorders and conditions also use it.
Is CBD Oil Safe During Pregnancy?
Many studies are currently researching the effects marijuana has on fetuses. Some of the women who had used marijuana during pregnancy delivered underweight newborns in the end. What’s more, their labor was more difficult and followed by various complications.
All current research focuses on prolonged exposure to marijuana, and the results are not that great. Thus, it’s best to play it safe and stay away from all marijuana by-products during pregnancy.
Still, some women resort to CBD oil when they’re pregnant, be it to battle vicious morning sickness or other symptoms. The best we can do in those situations is to consult a physician. We should never take CBD on our own.
Potential Risks of Consuming CBD While Pregnant
Research on this topic is scarce. Still, ingesting, smoking, or applying CBD topically will reach the fetus and affect it. Even though there are no studies that show that CBD oil can affect the fetus, the potential adverse side effects of marijuana are numerous. It can:
- Disrupt normal brain development
- Interfere with normal physical development
- Lead to an underdeveloped newborn
While CBD oil alone might not have any adverse side effects, we still have a lot to worry about if we use it during pregnancy. Since pure CBD is very rare, we’ll often find various chemicals and toxins in oil that will inevitably affect the fetus. Those include bacteria, metals, pesticides, and of course, THC.
CBD and Breastfeeding
Again, there are no studies that can confirm definitively if CBD has any effect on the baby if the mother takes CBD while breastfeeding. But, experts are still against it. Because we can pass various compounds to the baby through the milk, we shouldn’t reach for CBD oil while we nurse.
What’s more, CBD affects our cognitive function. When we have an infant, we are already sleep-deprived and exhausted. Thus, our cognitive capacity is less than stellar. Using anything that will further diminish our reasoning and affect our mind isn’t recommendable.
Potential CBD Oil Alternatives for Breastfeeding Moms
Anxiety, nausea, insomnia, and overall moodiness are no strangers to breastfeeding moms. So, before going for CBD oil to make battling these symptoms easier, consider a few alternatives:
- Keep a lot of snacks on hand to soothe the nausea
- Avoid spicy and greasy food if you’re dizzy and nauseous
- Try adding ginger to warm herbal teas
- Avoid prescription medication, but resort to it if needed
Insomnia, anxiety, and potential depression come from surging hormones, so try warm milk, relaxation, meditation, and therapy to soothe the symptoms. Most importantly, don’t be scared to ask for help if you’re sad, anxious, or just tired.
